So, how has modern fashion come to be? How has it changed in the last fifty years?
In this months issue, we look at how fashion has changed, the HOTTEST outfits from this Red Carpet season and the all important Career Advice, for those of you interested in a career in Fashion Design. Oh how times have changed...Take a look below to see the highlights from this months cover story and our take on famous fashion eras.
Firstly, we have the 1960’s; during this time, floral prints were big and so too were geometric patterns. For this look, our MANNEQUIN model, Idowu, is wearing a floral patterned 1960’s inspired skater dress. When asking Idowu about this fashion era, she told us that the sixties are a ‘huge inspiration’ for her and the clothes that she wears when she isn't modelling. ‘I love the bold colours combined with the soft floral patterns’ she continues. ‘I tend to wear a lot of 1960’s inspired vintage clothes. I find that they have a certain amount of elegance that modern day clothes don’t. I like that.’ We like your thinking, Idowu!

Two decades later, we reach the 1980’s, the decade of rather large crimped hair and leg warmers, disco dancing and roller skating. The 1980’s was a very memorable fashion decade and one which cannot be forgotten.
Instead of following the normal, 1980’s style of bright yellow leg warmers, disco pants, a pink headband and crimped hair, here at MANNEQUIN, we decided to go for a more elegant, regal 1980’s inspired look, with a leather jacket added on top to give a biker, eighties feel. ‘I wasn't alive in the eighties’, Idowu states; ‘the whole funky feel of it, though, does make me wish I was! The clothes from that decade look so fun, and, well, eighties!’ Finally we have the 2000’s, of the ‘noughties’ as some would say.
For this not-so-classic but rather modern look, we dresses Idowu in a V-neck striped tee and black skinny jeans. ‘You can’t go wrong with modern fashion; there are so many different styles around. It doesn't really matter what you wear, just as long as you feel comfortable. Nowadays, you don’t necessarily have to conform to certain fashion norms as there are so many styles. Just go with the flow, that’s my motto!’ We couldn't agree more! |
Meet Hannah Fox; she's the up-and-coming designer that has had a pretty lucky year!
She was the star of London Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week and even Paris Fashion Week. In an exclusive interview with us here at MANNEQUIN, Miss. Fox herself tells us all of her tips and tricks in fashion design and how it feels to see your designs walk down the catwalk of three infamous shows!
So, Hannah, it’s absolutely lovely to meet you! How does it feel having your designs showcased at three of the worlds largest Fashion Week’s?
Honestly, it is unbelievable! When I was younger, I would always dream of someone wearing something which I designed, but I never thought all of this would happen! Two years ago I was a student in London finishing my degree and now I’m here; talking about my designs!
That must have been an experience and a half! What was it like knowing that your collection was shown alongside Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney collections?
It certainly was! Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney have always been a massive inspiration to me, ever since I was little! When my collection was showcased between theirs at New York Fashion Week I very nearly fainted! It is such a surreal, crazy feeling; Stella (McCartney) even congratulated me!
Well, I’m not at all surprised! Your collection is stunning! You said that you only finished your degree two years ago, how did you manage to make it this far so quickly?
I have worked so hard to get here! While I was at university, I done a lot of volunteer work at different fashion houses for a few weeks at a time which really helped with gaining experience. I was constantly making my own clothing and also designing as much as I possibly could. I guess that I got this far due to dedication. Not many people know exactly what they want to do but I always have; I guess that’s why I’m here. I love what I do and I always have. When I finished my degree, I opened up my own shop with some money I had saved and decided to sell the clothes that I made, a couple of celebrities were seen wearing my designs and then everything went a bit crazy. Now I’m here!
It’s like a dream come true for you! Now, this is a question for all of our readers; what tips and tricks do you have to help them with designing and making clothing?
Well, I would definitely say time! Time is an absolute must-have. In order to create a good design, you need to make sure that you’re dedicating enough time to it; you need to draw it and then then draw it again two or three more times until you are 100 percent happy with it! After that, you need to make sure that the materials you use are suitable and wearable. Finally, make sure that the equipment you use is up to standard! Dodgy equipment leads to a dodgy outcome and you will want to start all over again which is a complete waste of time!
